Abstract

The development of communicative linguistic competence in the language of a given host community is an indispensable necessity for the integration of migrants and their incorporation in the labor market. The construction of this communicative competence in the target language by a non-native speaker is characterized by performing in a partial way; this means that immigrants residing in Spain (in our case, in the Community of Madrid) can show a clearly defined asymmetric competition due to their specific context. The present work intends to define the asymmetry in the communicative competence of immigrant workers through the results obtained by the 307 candidates who had submitted to the examination of the 5th call for the diploma LETRA. Also, since the exam evaluates the candidate’s competence by giving a different weighting to the marks obtained in each one of the parts or tests on the total of the exam (reading comprehension test: 24%, audiovisual comprehension test: 18%; 18% and oral expression and interaction test: 40%), we observe whether the scores of our informants vary depending on the use of the asymmetric measurement versus an equal weighting (25% for each test) and whether there is a significant difference between the two. The results of this study show that the candidates who had presented to the exam have a greater mastery in oral skills than in written ones, which is higher in receptive than productive activities. On the other hand, the final grades obtained by applying the different types of measurements vary significantly.
