Abstract

The aim of the presentstudy was to analyse the perceptions ofbilingual andmultilingual speakers regarding the emotional weightof their languages and the preferred language to talk about emotional topics. Forty participants from different linguistic backgrounds, most of them speakers of three languages, completed The Bilingualism and EmotionsQuestionnaire, which allowed to collect data relatedtotheirlanguages and their perceived emotionality. The results revealed that first language is perceived as the one with the greatest emotional weight, although this emotional superiority seems to be linked to factors such as the context of language acquisition and use,and life experiences and opportunities for interaction using a certain language. Moreover, the difficulty in talking about emotional topics in languages other than the first language was attributed to the lack of vocabulary, linguistic knowledge (not) shared with the interlocutor and misunderstandings that may arise, as well as to the greater emotionality of the first language.
