Abstract

China's behaviour in relation to the war in Ukraine may not be meeting the expectations of some political leaders and analysts. However, it seems consistent with the overall external projection of Xi Jinping's China. In this sense, if relations between the PRC and Ukraine prior to the outbreak of the war, albeit with ups and downs, had been reasonably good while, at the same time, Beijing claimed to build a «rock-solid» partnership with Moscow, in the context of the military confrontation this ambiguity and equidistance will be maintained to a large extent. Thus, China reiterates both the importance of respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states and its understanding of Russia's alleged anxiety about its own security. Moreover, while China, always fearful of the consequences of destabilisation resulting from military confrontation, would probably have preferred the invasion not to take place, now that it is a fact, it seems to have accepted it, hoping that it can contribute to its own objectives in terms of redefining the international order.
