This paper aims to analyse and compare the language proficiency tests required for access to nationality by the migrant population in Spain and in the main recipients of the Spanish-speaking population in Europe (United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy). Two other countries of interest are added to the analysis, namely Canada, due to its migratory trajectory, and Portugal, due to its similarity to Spain in terms of language proficiency requirements, and it is complemented with a review of the language requirements established in the Spanish-speaking countries with the largest number of immigrants. The study of the corpus of tests will serve to clarify the role of language in the processes of nationality, as well as the characteristics and suitability of the tools for measuring linguistic proficiency adding a comparison between countries.
