Abstract
Biofuel production can represent a threat to food security, biodiversity, and even climate change if it is not handled under adequate policies. However underlying opportunities, given its renewable nature and its high labor intensity, cannot be underestimated and contrarily should be explored. If sustainable development is set as a policy goal for the biofuels industry, a threshold towards growth is presented to developing countries such as Colombia. Consequently, the country can exploit latecomer advantages based on the earlier experiences of Brazil. Employment possibilities and nature preservation are achievable under certificated production.
