Abstract

The People’s Republic of China, until recently considered a rising power, is now a major global power that articulates a foreign policy, which can be described as revisionist, aimed at consoli- dating its national power by gaining the respect of other powers, maintaining its area of influence free from the influence of other powers and increasing the projection of its own influence. This foreign policy, clearly more assertive since the arrival of Xi Jinping to the presidency, has the Asian region as its priority, considered by the People’s Republic of China as «its region», since it seems clear that if China wishes to increase its global role it must be able to condition the policies of its neighbours and control its region. Hence, the relationship with both the other regional powers and the ASEAN states is crucial.
