Abstract

ype 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects millions of people worldwide. This disease has a number of complications and among them is diabetic neuropathy, which affects the sensitivity of the most distal parts of the body. The aim of this thesis is to test whether a whole body vibration program is applicable, safe and tolerated; useful for improving vibrotactile threshold; effective for decreasing glycosylated hemoglobin; beneficial for static balance, strength and fitness; and finally suitable for improving health-related quality of life. For this purpose, a whole body vibration program of 3 sessions per week and 8 weeks duration was carried out, in which 90 people with type 2 diabetes participated and assigned to a vibration group and a placebo group. As a result of this study, 10 articles were published, of which the main findings were a) the study is safe, applicable and tolerated; b) there were no improvements in vibrotactile threshold; c) there was no statistically significant decrease in glycosylated hemoglobin; d) there were no statistically significant benefits in static balance, strength and physical condition; and e) the whole body vibration training program does not produce improvements in health-related quality of life.
