Abstract

In this chapter, we have presented the Spanish regulation that enable the requirement of the demonstration of certain knowkedge of Spanish and Spanish society in order to grant nationality, in its European and global context. From this study, it can be deduced that these requirements derive from the sovereign competences of the states when deciding who are their nationals. They cannot, in themselves, be considered discriminatory or contrary to human rights. Similar requirements, on ther other hand, have been recommended by institutions of the EU and are being extended by most of the states of the Council of Europe. Moreover, ther have not been challenged in Spain by the jurisprudence of the national courts, nor on the continent by the jurisprudence of the European international courts.
